How chart values are calculated
Every kilogram result is calculated by multiplying the pound value by exactly 0.45359237.
Example: calculate 35 pounds
35 x 0.45359237 = 15.87573295
35 pounds = 15.87573295 kilogramsExample: calculate 175 pounds
175 x 0.45359237 = 79.37866475
175 pounds = 79.37866475 kilogramsChart accuracy and rounding
The conversion factor is exact, but the chart rounds many results to two or four decimal places so they remain easy to read.
A scale or product label may also round the original pound value. Converting a rounded source value does not make the physical measurement more precise.
When a chart is useful
- checking common weight values quickly;
- comparing pound and kilogram scale readings;
- checking luggage and package weights;
- comparing gym equipment;
- checking a calculator result;
- reviewing decimal and fractional pound values.
Use the calculator for values not shown or when additional decimal precision is required.
Common chart mistakes
Using the nearest row
Convert the actual value when it falls between two listed entries.
Ignoring decimal pounds
A reading of 49.5 pounds is not the same as 49 or 50 pounds.
Confusing pounds and ounces
Eight ounces is 0.5 pound, so 10 pounds 8 ounces equals 10.5 pounds.
Assuming rounded chart values are exact displays
The underlying conversion is exact, but the chart may shorten the displayed kilogram result.
